Eating Disorders Treatment
Eating Disorders - When slim is not enough
Dissatisfaction with the figure and the weight, restrained eating behavior and cravings are widespread among the population. If they reach large dimensions, there may be an eating disorder.
How do eating disorders show up?
Affected people often deal a lot with topics related to food and weight, curb their eating behavior e.g. with diets or counting calories. This behavior often leads to cravings. Some sufferers try to "balance" these cravings, e.g. by vomiting or taking diuretics (laxatives) or by excessive exercise.
Some people with eating disorders are massively underweight, like anorexia. Other sufferers are normal or overweight, often with bulimia or binge eating disorder.
Effects of eating disorders
Often, those affected suffer from low self-esteem, which is all the more damaged by the feelings of guilt and shame they often experience around the eating disorder. In addition, conflicts or incomprehension often arise in the social environment, and those affected often withdraw.
As a result of malnutrition and / or repeated vomiting, there are also massive physical consequences that can be life-threatening for those affected.
Eating disorder - what to do?
If you suspect you have an eating disorder, get psychotherapeutic or medical help. In our start: Practices in Berlin and Wiesbaden, competent psychological diagnostics for eating disorders are carried out and individual therapy options are offered.
On request, you can use a self-test on the subject areas of anorexia and bulimia, which gives a first impression, but does not replace professional diagnostics.
What does the treatment look like?
In psychotherapy, individual goals are first agreed upon and steps towards them made transparent.
On the one hand, treatment is about normalizing eating behavior and weight and improving the relationship with your own body. In addition to these specific topics, your psychotherapist will also help you to strengthen your self-esteem, improve the way you deal with negative thoughts and feelings, and use your strengths to pursue your goals and achieve long-term life satisfaction.
